As Dave Ramsey says if more people help people there would be no need for these welfare programs. Maybe I wouldn't think so lowly of these programs had I not witnessed first hand the high volume of people who abuse these programs. Some people undoubtably need help, others just sit around and whine on how they can't get ahead and complain about others success. There is a lot more to the term "conservative" than hating welfare programs.

After drinking 1 cup of yerba daily for 20 yrs, suddenly it seemed to go right through me, even with the small amount of cream I add to it.

I've only recently (in the last year) become a Christian. I used to love alternative music and I was raised with three brothers who have always been into...I guess you'd call it "college" comedy. You know, really crude stuff, like Super Troopers. I have such a hard time listening to music or going out to movies anymore. It's difficult for me because I know that it's for the best, but it does feel constricting sometimes. But I've also found that when I am able to listen to music or watch movies in which there is no compromise -I'm just relieved. I don't have to worry about being eroded spiritually by those things and can simply enjoy them. Kudos, Mr. Acuff, for bringing this up.

If you guys are really concerned about your childrens' minds, I would suggest you study cognitive science. The human brain is not really different from an animal brain. It's bigger and more complex, but it still works in basically the same way. We still respond to Pavlovian conditioning techniques, which is why we form habits (it's also responsible for the phenomenon called "muscle memory", where something you've repeated enough times becomes so automatic that you can do it without thinking).

Given that knowledge, it is obvious that "exposure" to something is really not a problem at all. It's constant repetition (particularly when cognitive aids are included, like catchy short nursery-style musical rhymes) which alters the mind, not mere "exposure". In other words, if your kids watch a program which contains a bit of objectionable material, that will have pretty much no significant effect on their mental development. You should worry far more about the COMMERCIALS. They use all the tricks: flashy visuals, catchy nursery-style tunes, and of course, massive and precisely identical repetition, so that the child will see the exact same commercial thousands of times.

You know, when Jesus railed at people who failed to do the right thing, he didn't even mention modesty or cleavage. Sexuality seems to be an ENORMOUSLY overrated aspect of morality.

This started happening to me about 4 yrs ago when I met my husband. We don't care for movies where the actress has cleavage in every scene. It's annoying to us both. It's not that those movies are bad, we just don't care for them. Our date night always consists of a kids movie now. I may be labeled conservative because things like that bother me, but who really cares? I'm the onethat has to go to bed at night knowing I did the right thing and lived with a good conscience about it all.

Why are taxation and government handouts not the way? Killing the welfare state won't stop nationalistic militarism. Nations were imperialist and militarist centuries before any of them had welfare systems.

Welfare is one of the few things government does that actually helps the weak. Why do you oppose it? Don't tell me that the church is supposed to do that job. We used that system for centuries, and it resulted in extreme poverty. Only in the modern relatively socialistic era do we have poor people who don't have to worry about starving.

Why would you assume that it's a uniquely Christian thing to change your opinions as you get older? It would be truly bizarre for people NOT to change any of their opinions as they get older. There are only two ways someone could have the exact same opinions at 40 that he had at 20:

1) His opinions at 20 were perfect.
2) He has learned absolutely nothing in the 20 years between age 20 and age 40.

Neither option is particularly likely. This is not a "Christian" thing; it's a human thing.

I always hated the misogynist and self-glorifying themes in hip-hop music, and I'm an atheist. You don't have to be a Christian to find that behaviour offensive.
