Actually, ABC or other major network compared Ralph Lauren polos shirts and Knights of the Round Table. Out of the 4 polos (with judges not knowing which polo belonged to which brand), 3 Knights of the Round Table polos outscored the Ralph Lauren polos based on quality/fit and finish of the shirt. So price and name brand aren't everything.

Jon,
You're right on target. Instead of convincing our people how cool and cutting edge we are, we should be doing all we can to get our people to see the amazing love, power, wisdom of The Great I AM. Technology can be a great distraction if we allow it to be.

It would not if the iPad is used appropriately. There are many protective cases for the iPad that prevent the pastor from advertising for Apple. Moreover, if he were treat the iPad as he would his paper notes, then he could place the device on the pulpit as his point of reference and when expounding on his point, walk away from the podium having his hands free for expression.

HAHA...Jon, a pastor friend of mine just told me he bought an iPad to teach from. And he did say that he didnt want the fact that he's teaching from an iPad to be the focus but that Christ remain the focus of the sermon. But it is a tool that I think most people find necessary to beg their wives for. I hope you've gotten one by now. I actually googled preaching apps for iPad and came across your blog...and I am in the middle of Quitter right now. How ironic.

Funny as it is, I now own an iPad 2. Got it for father's day. I was able to convince my wife and from her loving, kind Christian heart she blessed me. A few months ago I was watching a few pastors preach on various channels where I saw a mysterious glow on theirs faces as they stared down at their pulpits. I said, ah haa! They're using iPads and so must I..... I shall get one. How I justify it- I can afford it. I'm an aspiring preacher. Though not paid for preaching. I'm a prosperous entrepreneur. I've absolutely no credit card debit and best of all is- unlike papers and folders, the iPad can be used to store and present all my notes, research and past sermons at a few clicks. Kinda like the same reason I stopped carrying a beeper, lol. You have some great observations though. Like, why do I need an iPad when I have an iPhone, MacBook pro and 2 32gig iPods that are nearly maxed. I need the new iTouch now then I can get rid of some iPods, lol.

Great article and a lot to think about. After reading so many articles why it’s a useful tool, it’s good to read a different point of view. I am currently in ministry and have debated getting one to use during my sermons. After using paper notes for so many years, I thought it would be great to use the iPad, and at the same time give the impression to the younger congregants that I was a bit up to date. I would hate doing something in myself that would take away from the word of God. Thanks again.

Read your post with much amusement, and I do have to agree that "pour some sugar on me" is possibly one of the finest songs ever recorded. On a serious note, I am a youth pastor and have recently started preaching from my iPad. Primarily because it is nice, and small and compact and one of the most efficient ways of bring a bible, reference notes and sermons notes to a pulpit. In saying that, I don't tend to walk around with it. Not because I don't want to, because honestly, I do like the look, but just because I tend to be a bit of a klutz and drop things.

But don't confuse the message with the media. The gospel is still relevant, and will continue to be so as times change. It does not mean that the preacher isn't opening his or her bible, it does not mean that the message is not spirit led, and it does not mean that the depth or the quality of the message changes.

iPads are here to stay. Preaching form an iPad is as well. But in all let us remember that the good news doesn't change...

Personally,I do mind,as this seems to indicate, that the pastor is not relying on the Holy Spirit,to give him the words he needs to speak. He simply writes the whole sermon on a piece of paper, prays over it,and then just reads it,looking up every now and again, probably to see if hes managing to keep the attention of the church.Where else must the church look anyway?
Ihave noticed in the past, that some of these speakers, have a piece of paper in their hands, and every 10 minutes or so,glance at it,in order to get the next part of his prepared sermon.
This I feel is better, because then he can walk around somewhat,an allow God to use him properly.
In my viewpoint,a weel studied man of God will do this.
