GREAT post. I'm on the technical crew for a giant church in North Texas and it's so true that the techs are invisible until something goes drastically wrong. Thanks for spreading the understanding. We hold ourselves to a very high standard and believe me, we kick ourselves for the mistakes you don't even notice are mistakes.

I have found a way so ppl do not complain.
I just say "If you have a problem, would you like to volunteer and be on the team?"
My complaints are now almost non-existent.

As one who also runs the sound at my church, I have come up with a pat answer when somebody tells me there is something wrong with the sound.
My response is "It sounds good where I am sitting!"

I can safely say that our church is in no danger of setting off the fire alarm with a fog machine. I'm still trying to figure out why a church needs a fog machine. I attended Hillsong London a couple of weeks ago, and they do have a fog machine. Great music, but the fog machine really didn't do it for me.

haha - Perhaps I came away with the wrong message here...but this highlights a different church-service-related frustration to me. The tendency that when anything "appears" to go wrong, we all turn our heads back to the TECH booth with that sort of, "Get with it" expression (myself included).

I empathize with Jobs. Not because his iPhone didn't work, but because this entire thread thinks his iPhone didn't work. My understanding is that he was demonstrating the new retina display picture quality, not the speed of the phone. Nor did he ever elude to the fact that iPhone 4 will be any faster than the last model (did he?). The slow WiFi connection was a moot point.

WHAT AM I SAYING?
Perhaps a different angle of the same issue, but maybe my problem isn't all the hiccups in the church program, but that I'm now conditioned to look for hiccups in every church program...

Let's also remember the times when someone comes up with something that must be done "before the sermon" or "didn't they tell you I'm doing a special" and it is time for the service to start. No chance to review, no time to set up. Come on, people! That's a mistake waiting to happen and it's not on the tech people.

Once the small church that I was attending had a woman's conference going on. I was 'the sound man' no other staff at all. So I was elected to run the sound. I put myself in the sound booth before people got there and since it was high enough up, no woman knew I was there. Everything went fine till the very last session when there was a squeal and the person on the platform asked me by name if I had it under control. WOW, all those woman looking at me at once (Who let the man in here?)
When things go right you never get noticed, but when things go wrong... you can never be good enough!

Our pastor always comes out on stage with dual fog machines to "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor. But one week someone clicked on "Survivor" by Destiny's Child. That was weird.

Check out the book “Pagan” by George Barna. IT traces the origins of the early church & shows how many of our so called worship practices really are just pagan copies.<br />
