Umm... Sounds like Joel has a conscience and is doing doing what he can to guard himself from something he knows is not right in his life. I did not find a sense of shame, but a sense of impending victory!

Additionally, I would say that yes, those who struggle with the other sins you mention do indeed have guilt and shame, as the Lord has pricked their conscience about not being obedient and to Him, and giving Him Lordship over that area of their lives. Paul said in Romans 7, "For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do." While he may have been referring to lust, I doubt it. He declares in 1 Timothy 1 that,"Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst." Just before that he is talking about how he was a blasphemer, a prosecutor and a violent man." In other passages he hints that his biggest sin was indeed pride. To me, many of these passages are those of a tortured soul, but always pointing also to the relief of that torture through Jesus Christ.

Jon, thanks for your post, and Caroline and others for your response. I actually experienced a level of understanding and fellowship w/you all through these postings in a way that I haven't experienced in my church and amongst my friends for a looong time because most of them are married and have a tendency to share their explanation to why they believe i'm "still single" and had offered suggestions to fix me by placing me under a mircroscope. Many of them have good intentions and I appreciated the times they invited single friends to have dinner w/us. When some of them ran out of ideas because I've already tried many of them being 31 and single, then they resort to either the God card by telling me to be more satisfied in God and need to pray more or that "you're just too picky" as if I should marry the first single guy I cross paths with today. Pretty much things included in Jon's Surviving Church as a Single blog.

I've done some serious research on this singles phenomenon, mainly through the tool of intense observations at people I know to study the common patterns of what married people have in common w/their spouses and how they met. Amongst them are the young, the more mature, tall, short, good looking, not so good looking, the average and other characteristics such as ethnicities and backgrounds. The surprising result is that none of them are perfect either and marriage continues to be challenging and refining. What I've come to find is that it really boils down to God's miraculous grace on pairing up two people who are totally depraved, dysfunctional and undeserving of each other and of God.

Here is another example I thought of:

"Yea my friend Sue is almost 35 and still single. I know she desires to be married. Instead of introducing her to great Christians guys I know. I'll just pray that God brings him along soon for her and say all the Christian phrases to her."

It sounds like you're torturing yourself.

Of all the 7 deadly sins (gluttony, lust, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, pride), why is lust the only one which creates such intense feelings of guilt and shame? Do you think morbidly obese people feel this much shame when they belly up to the buffet table? Do you think wealthy Christians lie awake at night worrying that their extravagant greed makes them awful people? Do you think lazy Christians are torn up about it? Do you think Christians who support wars and death penalties are twisted up in knots about the sin of wrath? Do you think people who desire their neighbours' income are made to feel nearly as much shame as those who desire their neighbours' wives? Do you think people who "look out for number one" feel this bad about committing the sin of pride?

Why should you feel worse about your lustful thoughts than an obese man does about his gluttony?

Yeah, I think maybe God does want a little effort on our part with that one...after all our bodies are a temple of the whole spirit.

However, i can testify to some miraculous weight loss! Nothing is impossible with God lol
