I love reading and hearing all these posts on Haiti and not one mention on the Chilean earthquake, where the earthquake was more severe and in a couple of months people had to live in tents with below zero temperatures for the winter.

This comment is meant mainly for Kelly and Sarah; I don't know if anyone's still reading this post or the comments, but if you are, can I please guide you to Luke 13: 1-5? We read this in our Bible Study a few weeks ago and it stuck in my mind, partly because of Pat Robertson's comments about Haiti. When the people came to the Lord to tell him about some Galileans who had been murdered at the temple, he asks them if they believe the ones who died were more sinful than they were. He also talks about people who were killed when a tower fell on them, and again asks whether they were more sinful. He answers his own question: "I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish."

I know that in the Bible there are many descriptions of God's "instant" judgment, where people are seen to be punished in this life for their sins; it happens in the New Testament (with Ananias and Sapphira) as well as in the old. But I think the point that the Lord was making was that when these things do happen, and when people suffer terrible devastation, even if it is as punishment for their sins, WE are no less sinful or deserving of punishment. We need to be careful about making these pronouncements: when we say that the people of Haiti were Satan-worshippers and so deserving of death, we are saying that we are better than they were, and that we do not deserve death for our "smaller" rebellions against the Almighty God.

Most of all, we need to pray for the survivors and those affected, and ask the Lord: "What can I do?".

For a number of years I have sponsored children through His Hands for Haiti. This is a Christian organization coordinated through local pastors. They are in the Cap-Haitien area (northern Haiti). For $80.00 ($40.00 twice a year) you can send a child to school, provide them with a uniform, and give them a hot meal. Sometimes this is their only meal that day. http://www.hishandsforhaiti.org/default.asp

Why is there a backlash against people helping the Haitians now?!! grrrr....
All these people in the U.S.who are complainin' that we need to help "our own" before other countries, and I doubt they spend even an hour volunteering or donate more than a couple bucks to a shelter or other relief organizations FOR U.S. citizens.

If you're a blogger (or a commenter) you should check out: http://www.moneysavingmom.com/money_saving_mom/20...

Linking up to that and multitudes of other blogs will multiply the donations that people are already making to help those suffering in Haiti (i.e. $1/link $.50/comment).

I've posted similarly on my own blog: http://skooksplayground.blogspot.com/2010/01/what...

Please stop by and link up your post about what you're doing to help those in Haiti.

I live in the Dominican Republic in a small city that is only two hours away, and it is so crazy how something like this can prove to you just how little control you have on life. teams have been coming in from all over the world, what they need right now is Jesus. Haiti is a dark place that Jesus can change.

In 2009 I had the blessing of going to Haiti twice with One Vision International. This ministry cares for a group of 120+ children, most of them left orphaned and homeless as a result of the 3 hurricanes and 1 tropical storm that struck Haiti in the fall of 2008. On Tuesday, the earthquake destroyed the structure that they currently call home, but all of the children are miraculously alive and very few injured. They are now living under two tarps on the property, well away from any of the damaged structures that could still crumble. One Vision has several relief trips planned for the coming weeks, but they obviously need financial resources to provide for the children's ongoing needs and need for new shelter. To learn more and to make a donation, you can visit their Web site at www.onevisionintl.org. Thank you!
