[...] I don’t know how this should shake out this year. Maybe no news at all, but just an awkward picture, ready for the fridge? Perhaps a Newsletter Farewell Tour that includes flashbacks to Newsletter Greatest Hits? Should I go the Jon Acuff route and make a Twitter-length Christmas card? [...]

Michael, that is THE best! May I "scalp" it (copy it). Since I didn't get around to it for Christmas I can see how it would be worthwhile for any time you're writing someone. I'm thinking a "share the love" theme for Valentines' Day and a "Let's resurrect kindness" for my Easter cards. (Now I just have to pray for the money for the gift cards to fund this terrific endeavor!) Thanks for sharing your creative generosity! Jo

My sister-in-law's family Christmas letter this year featured a different kind of poem for each family member. A limerick for the little boy, a tanka for the girl, a haiku triplet for her, and a ballad for her husband. It was ahMAZing.

That was my Christmas letter this year - still living with my parents, still have no job. But hopefully things will get better next year. I always try to at least end on a positive note.

We here in Europe have this weird tradition of just sending out a card with the appropriate wishes on it, and not a recap of the year. I think the rationale behind it is that if you care enough to send a card, you'll have talked to them at least once this year. Or maybe we're just lazy, I don't know.

We used to design and make our own cards every year... one of my favorites was called Godzilla vs last year's fruit cake... we designed it like a movie poster with a little godzilla squeek toy fighting off fruitcakes while the city burned in the background... we made them as postcards and used gozilla pawprints to divide the place for the address and where we wrote our messages. People kept asking me where we bought them... I kept trying to explain we made them... alas. More than one person was not happy with it's complete lack of "Christian" message. I figured how we lived our lives and what came out of our mouths the rest of the year made up for it. :)
