But apparently, you have decided you are in a place to judge by still writing that she's not a Christian.

I also wouldn't expect someone who has never been a depressed teenage girl with low self-esteem to relate to Bella the same way, but it concerns me how some adults' attitude toward the character might reflect their attitudes toward troubled young women in real life.

You're right, people seem to be jumping on the hate bandwagon without really reading the series. I am particularly disturbed, though, by some comments by those claiming to have read it, which reflect a very shallow understanding. I do not understand how anyone who has REALLY READ it, as opposed to SKIMMING it so they could complain about it, could come away thinking it glorifies pedophilia, or that Bella showed complete disrespect for her father, or that her father failed to challenge her behavior and Edward's.

Bella is not stupid. She's a depressed girl with low self-esteem BEFORE she falls under the (unintentional) spell of the Cullens' (unexploited) predatory allure. Bella knows this and is worried about herself, and the reader is supposed to be worried about her too. I don't think it takes an adult reader to view her bad choices as a cautionary tale (though I don't like the idea of young children reading this series).

Exactly. Not wonderful writing, not terrible. I think a lot of the vitriol directed against this series is the result of people feeling the books and/or movies have been forced on them.

I believe Twilight's true standing in literature/pop culture will be clearer ten years down the road, when the hype AND the reactionary whining have ended.

By the way, I am referring to the sermons I've heard, not the comments on this blog. Even the Twilight haters here so far have managed to avoid the trap of devaluing every female not between the ages of 18 and 34. From the two threads I've started reading so far.

I find the SCL environment generally insightful and enriching, and a sincere kudos to you guys.

The anti-Twilight bandwagon. I personally have had the dubious privilege of sitting through sermons berating Vampire stories, trivializing stereotypically feminine interests in general, and devaluing the point of view of females over 40 in particular. Good times.

Way to be progressive, people.

The modern obsession with Vampirism be fueled by the communion, Eucharist, Lord's Supper and the notion that drinking Jesus' blood gives eternal life? It seems that Vampires developed in the Middle Ages in the Catholic Church and will continue to be around until all Christians toss the Catholic corruption of the Eucharist out. The Catholics added this Paganism to the Bible, and now your children are sucking each others' blood because of it.

I saw the first movie and I will probably see all the others... I love works of fiction but at 26 I can see the difference in fiction and reality... that being said so can some teenagers, just because someone is under the age of 20 doesn't mean the can't read a book and appreciate it for what it is and leave it at; on the flip side just because someone is over 20 doesn't mean that they won't take the book too heart.

I will say that I had Godly parents that have always taught us that people as a whole are not perfect and that expecting perfection from a spouse can cause more damage to a marriage than many other things. They also taught us to have high standards and that is what I think the author was attempting to show. In a world were many young ladies have no example of a man in their lives or examples that cause more damage than good I think a series that actually enforces not having sex is a good thing. I read someone's comment about Edward portraying God I think that that's a good point of view. The Bible tells us that wifes should honor their husbands and that husbands should love their wives as God loved the church, this is impossible to accomplish but we are called to work towards it... I think the same cause be said for the movie, young women shouldn't be looking for someone that is Edward rather someone that shows the attributes that Edward shows or better yet a young man that strives to be like our Heavenly Father... Once again from what I have read about the author that is along the lines what she was trying to show.
