So true, Jon, but I have to tell you something about your last paragraph. I assumed that when my "Christian kids" got to be teens they'd want to go to coed parties and play Spin the Bottle and all that stuff, too.

But my girls are now 13 and 16, they're gorgeous, they're popular, and they're busy telling everyone they know how stupid it is to date at their age. So it's actually easier than you think! Just keep talking to them all the time and those teen years may not be so bad--by the grace of God.

This was cute! Thanks for sharing. My oldest is a girl who is 4. And I am also raising her to be a dork! So your post made me laugh and yet cry at the thought of her being old enough to think boys are cute!

I totally hear you. I was the same way in HS (homeschooled, but I had outside friends) and college and I look at being raised a dork as one of the greatest gifts my parents gave me. My father taught all 8 of his daughters that they are precious gifts and worthy of love and respect. B/c of that I knew that whatever he told me not to do was out of love and to keep me safe. As a result, I married my college sweetheart at 23, a virgin, and only ever having dated one man. We now how 5 kids and are raising them to be even dorkier than either of us is. I want my daughter to still love dolls when she's 10. I love that my sons love each other and want to care for their sisters. I love that my children revel in silly jokes and spending time with mommy and daddy. Being a dork is, to me, just another way of being a Christian: childlike and innocent, but oh so understanding of what God wants us to get out of life.

I prefer to think I'm raising my kids to be counter-cultural, which sounds way cooler than dork. :)

I have a 17 year old and am glad that her dad would take her to the mall and talk to her. He'd talk to her about anything so she knew she could talk to him. ALSO, at about 4 years old, he would point out the scantily clad girls walking by and tell her, "do you know what guys think when they see girls dressed like that?" That has stuck with her along with the father-daughter dances and feeling like a princess. She knows any guy will treat her with respect. Although we live as missionaries, we have tried not to shelter her but empower her to DISCERN and talk to us while she still can. She's gone to parties and chosen not to drink and decided that they weren't for her. Had we kept her from going without explaining or understanding, then it would be more tempting for her to go. She knows that she wants more out of life. Yep, she's a dork and proud of it! Just praying now for her as seh gets ready for college next yer.
