"Don't Make Me Hit You With My Pocketbook" is the name of a song??? LOL, I've never heard it! I'm out of it, I guess. The title conjures up some humorous thoughts, though--i tend to carry a BIG purse, so woe to anyone who gets hit with it....

I will usually only give a disclaimer for the sake of the other person. I don't care all that much about what others think of my tastes in music/movies/reading/art etc. If I think someone will be offended by something I watch, I wont recommend it to them, or I will tell them what it is and they can take it or leave it. A lot of the time people end up surprising me anyway. Like my mother-in-law, who likes XXX (the one with Vin Diesel, not porn).

I use #5 frequently. Actually, I used it the other day when I tried to convince my sister to come to ZUMBA with me. "Don't listen to the words...just the beat" Sure, like that is going to happen. Who am I kidding. I DO listen to the words every time we dance to "Don't Make Me Hit You With My Pocketbook" and they make me cringe up my face. Then I remember that it is an exercise class and my facial muscles need exercising too. So there you go.....

At my old job at a parachurch publishing house, I sat cattycorner from a lady who had a hugely popular Tejano pop song as her phone's ringtone. When I complimented her ringtone, she chirped, "Thanks! It's one of my favorite secular songs!" I just found her defense of such a wholesome song kind of funny, considering that nobody else in the office had any compunctions about listening to secular music (the lady who sat next to me had the intro from AC/DC's "Back in Black" as her ringtone, and there was a gal in my department who LOVED the Beastie Boys). But this was also someone who wrote a lengthy blog post defending her decision not to give her kid an explicitly biblical name.

I once tried to justify the movie "Crash" by saying it was "a brilliant look into the destructiveness of human depravity," even though they drop more f-bombs than a B-2. My friend agreed and walked out halfway through the film after the racy sex scene. I thought, "Shoot, there goes his relevance!"

I want to check on your American Beauty "akward moment" times, but I'm afraid I'll either find out you're a heathen or reveal myself as one.
