I had 5 Bs, but also 2 As...so mostly a good cop, but I'll drop the hammer when it counts...at least I'd like to think that, anyway :P

I do have to say, I love the "danceudrama" to a Carmen song option. Even if I was 100% good cop, I'd go for that option just because it rocks my face off. I would get my quota of laughs for a week with just that one thing.

In my church, youth groups are led by pairs of leaders (usually a guy and a girl) and I think the strength of the group is directly proportional to how closely both leaders can balance each other out.

My youth leader was mostly good cop - an example of the stuff that generally went on is the time we drove the church van out near O'Hare airport and parked on the side of the highway. Then we sat on top of the van, watched the planes take off, and ate ice cream out of the cartons with plastic spoons. When my girlfriend and I started throwing ice cream at passing cars, he laughed and didn't make us stop.

So there I was, minding my own business, when all of a sudden...

We were doing Sunday night bible study at the church. One of the kids brought a skateboard. I had my board and we were trying to use them like rollerskates, one on each foot.

When the kids couldn't pull me fast enough, one of the older ones started up his car. I had trouble holding on to it, so I put one of the other kids in the open trunk of the car holding a broom that I grabbed and used as a towrope while we went sailing across the parking lot at 20-30 mph.

As we rounded the corner, the mother of the kid in the open trunk pulled up and watched in shock as her son's legs were dangling and he nearly fell out onto the pavement.

I was immediately reverted from my (then)21yr. old youth pastor self to a scolded 15yr. old who was about to get a whooping...a bad whooping.

After she berated me I ultimately had to go over to their house and officially apoligize to the whole family for putting their child in danger.

They never came back to church.

It was then that I realized these parents were putting the lives and well-being of their children into my hands, and it was time to step up and quit being a kid.

From that day forward, my good cop days were over.

We were doing Sunday night bible study at the church. One of the kids brought a skateboard. I had my board and we were trying to use them like rollerskates, one on each foot.

When the kids couldn’t pull me fast enough, one of the older ones started up his car. I had trouble holding on to it, so I put one of the other kids in the open trunk of the car holding a broom that I grabbed and used as a towrope while we went sailing across the parking lot at 20-30 mph.

As we rounded the corner, the mother of the kid in the open trunk pulled up and watched in shock as her son’s legs were dangling and he nearly fell out onto the pavement.

I was immediately reverted from my (then)21yr. old youth pastor self to a scolded 15yr. old who was about to get a whooping…a bad whooping.

My bad cop youth pastor slammed a butcher knife into the stage and let it sort of quiver there to get kids to start paying attention at a rather distracted drama practice. It was his second month at the church so we all thought he was psycho. He ended up being mostly a good cop after that, except for other drama practices where he threw oven mitts and marbles and rolls of toilet paper, usually at people.

As far as I know, he's a respected (and sane) senior pastor now.

-audrey

I had a mix of good-cop bad-cop youth leaders growing up...I think most of them tended to be good-cop though. As a middle schooler I was totally more of a bad cop than some of my youth leaders.
Does this also apply to camp counselors? Because I hate to say that I'm probably a little more bad cop in that case...of course, that's probably because the kitchen crew or counselors in training that help out in the cabin aren't required to discipline campers, so they get to be the "fun" ones.
I think that it's better to be a mix...especially because if you tend to be more one way, you'll get a much better response when you do a 180. If the good cop suddenly says "Ok, you guys can NOT do that" it's more likely to be taken seriously. Or, in my case, I totally threw my middle school campers for a loop when on the last night I burst into the cabin with all the lights off and a flashlight to my face and said "put on dark clothes! We're sneaking out!" and had them sneak down to the lake to eat leftover cookies.
