Beautiful post - I struggle with a similar thing as an atheist in that I strive to be kind and compassionate (because it's right, not because of a God - although I think that's a perfectly good way of getting to the same place, just not for me) and some religious folks assume that we're a bunch of jerks who make fun of people who believe (similar to the "great reasons we give people" thing). I try to meet hatefulness with kindness, although probably not love...

I'm not perfect, and none of us are, but we can all try to be better to each other. There's always room to improve, right?

That is Grace...and a sure way to baffle a non-Christian and make them take another look at you.

My pastor recently used the example of Jean Valjean from Les Miserables. He stole silver from the Bishop, who was sheltering him, and was captured. The Bishop then offered his silver candlesticks to Valjean instead of condemning him.

I'm all for baffling. However, easy for me to say, harder to follow through.

I'm dealing with a "small-whack" issue this week with a close friend. God has graciously allowed us not to cross paths so far this week, and that has allowed me to get farther away from the personal hurt and closer back to showing love, rather than spewing sarcasm, which was what I really wanted to do initially. I still don't know quite how to handle this, but this post was really good for me to digest as part of my wisdom-seeking in this situation. Thanks.

Great post, and very timely, especially today. I would echo gracerules however, by asking what that might look like... what does loving someone who has whacked you mean? Is a personal change of heart all that is required or should there be an outwardly show of some sort as well. How do you respond if you are consistently and repeatedly misinterpreted, despite your best intentions, even to the point of a venomous attack? Is there a point at which it is best to just walk away? I am curious, as one of the commenters above, at how people have dealt with this principle in real life.

thanks Jon, what great contextualization and challenge based on something Jesus told us to do long ago (and in similar context) when many of us have ignored it and allowed it to stale in our hearts and lives.

I pray we can move toward being a church recognized by loud love
