Molly-
That's a really powerful idea about anointing artists, I've never thought about that. Thanks for the kind words about the post. Feel free to post it with a link back here, I would be honored.
Jon

Thanks, Jon, this means a great deal to me. My friend & pastor, Matt Messner, sent me a link to this post after a discussion we had the other night at their house about should churches anoint artists as they begin a new work in the way we anoint missionaries to embark on a new voyage. With your permission, I'd like to do a link to this on RansomedHeart.net in a discussion about the anointing of artists or, if it's ok, even reprint the article with a link back to your blog? It would encourage a lot of artists out there.
Warmly,
Molly Lyons

Jon I thought you should know this...
I did share this blog with one of my friends yesterday (like I said I would in a previous comment) and it really spoke to her and she said she LOVED everything you said in it. Well she is the Drama director and I'm the Stage Manager and right now we are getting ready for our churches Easter production called HIStory (yes the caps are supposed to be that way!). We've all been a little stressed out and stretched thin because of it (it's a 2 hour Passion play with a 150+ cast!!!) Last night was our dress rehearsal and our worship pastor (who is the Director) was haveing a bit of a hard time figuring out what he was going to say to the cast before we started rehearsal. He heard us talking about your blog (which he reads already cuz I found this blog though his) and how awesome it was! He said, "That's perfect! I was looking for something just like that!" So he went up to his office and printed it out to read to the entire cast and crew before we started our dress rehearsal!!! They all loved it too!!!

Thanks again Jon!

Oh and when he was explaining who you were he mentioned side hugs! LOL

I discovered those verses a couple years back and got the big wake up call. I'm artsy I suppose, but I'd felt for a long time that what I was doing (graphic designer for my church) wasn't "real ministry." I was very wrong.

Good post, thanks for sharing.

Kerrie,
Bring what you have. Everyone creates something. I happen to be a theologizer and a counselor. Those are both creative gifts, though not explicitly "artistic." I use them to build up individuals and the community (temple, body, people, family...) of God. That is the work God has gifted me with, and I bring it to both the church and to the world.

Erik,
You might want to take it down a notch on the perfection angle. Do your work honorably, and take the long view. Perfectionism will burn out the best minister among us. Besides, it's idolatry. It was good enough for God to live with the limitations of humanity, so it's sure good enough for us to be limited humans too.

Thank you for reminding me that creating/writing is not about me... it's an answer to a call. I forget that sometimes...

This post meets me exactly where I'm at right now.

The startup that I worked for as a software engineer ran out of money a month ago, leaving me unemployed. I've spent most of my free time pursuing anything art or design-related - decorating my apartment with DIY projects, redesigning a ministry guide. I love it. It fills me with life. But part of me is filled with guilt doing these things, thinking that I can do so much more in this world through engineering (or insert-any-practical-talent-here) than art.

I'm pretty sure that God has been telling me over the past month that this is not true. Your post is the latest in a series of revealing experiences to teach me that. Thanks for being a vehicle!

God created beauty, wholeness, structure, out of nothing. Why wouldn't he want us to do that around us too? It's all a part of rebuilding this broken world into something new.

Grace and peace!
