The volunteer sound guys are the best! Our churches sound board is run entirely by teenagers, and so is the video. We have to retrain every four years, but if you start early enough (in 7th grade in my case) you get pretty good. And, we almost never have problems.

As a former production manager I can confirm that this is true. One time when the mic went out during prayer, while all the heads were bowed, I sunk on stage and handed the pastor another microphone only to then discover that it didn't work either.

Woah, "people usually like side hugs"??? Nooooo, please don't assume that! Re-read your "church massage" article - same rules apply to side hugs, thank you very much! ;)
This is great stuff. I am SO guilty of this one! Seriously, though, sometimes I HAVE to wonder if they notice it or they're asleep back there! You're right, it's s jerk thing to do. Busted.

“I see you in the balcony. You down at the sound booth. You up on the corner of the stage, I’m seeing you too, and I’m not happy.”

This reminded me of the "Old Spice" guy.

Wow, I have been a church "sound guy" for 25 years, and now I am an A/V Consultant, installer and engineer. I have suffered through my share of Neck cranes but must say that churches typically bring this on themselves by having volunteers do the most complicated job in the entire church. You would never dream of having a volunteer pastor, so we put a volunteer in charge of something that has the ability to make or break a worship service. Why is this?????
Many times you get what you pay for. If you want consistent, problem free audio, video and lighting, treat these positions with respect.
Just because a guy worked at Radio Shack( have actually seen this one) does not make him technically qualified to tech a worship service.
Poor equipment choices make this even more difficult, even with a pro crew this can limit the success they have.
Most churches place little or no value on this position. Remember that the next time you do the sound guy neck crane. He may be doing it because no one else would vounteer.
