Although I enjoyed the cute punch-lines, I really think that candle holding is as reverent as praying, for it represents God’s light from ancient times. No amount of ipods, cell phone lights or any other technology can replace the simple candle’s message of light coming into the world. I’s almost the same as singing the hymn: This Little Light of Mine (I’m gonna let it shine…) Some things in tradition (and I have the whole Greek Orthodox community to agree) are meant to be held forever. Such is our love for God.

We took 6 teenagers to Christmas Eve service this year. My 16 year old son gave me the shoulder shakes as he added a “wh” to every line of “Silent Night” as he disguised the stealth blowing of his sibling’s/friend’s candles with the emotion of advent.

Ya, in Jr. High, I actually lit my bulletin on fire (on purpose). My dad couldn’t hold in the laughs. Since he thought it was funny, I tried this every year. Now, at 28 and a youth pastor, others don’t think it’s that funny anymore…they don’t know the pure joy it brings to set things on fire.

Not only is it entertaining for the congregation to have candles, but think of the choir members – long flowing robes, juggling 3 books in your hands, walking the proper distance from the people in front of you, AND holding a lit candle. Special prayers for the one walking behind the girl with the long flowing hair!

Whenever I attend an event where everyone has a lit candle I try to get next to one of my friends and sing the line from ‘This Little Light of Mine’, “Don’t let satan *puff* it out”, while at the same time blowing my friend’s candle out. Oh, the things your youth pastor teaches you!
