Our snack nazi's would only give you half a pitcher of watered down lemonade for a class of 15 kids who had just come inside from the games station! Now, I make lemonade by the 5 gallon cooler-full! Love me some VBS snacks!

So true! My cousin and I are co-directors of VBS and that was one of our main priorities this year- snacks reform! Many of our VBS memories include stale dollar store cookies, watered down Kool-Aid, and being yelled at because "NO, you CANNOT have another!" We laugh about it now but don't want our church's current kids to remember the same.

Just trying to get the old snack nazis to serve popsicles last year was nearly impossible. I'm surprised we didn't have a visit from an ambulance from the heart attacks it nearly caused.

Frozen grapes were a specoal treat in ancient Rome, kinda like fruits and nuts in Christmas stockings...traditions disappearing due to mass (and cheap) production, preservation and consumerism. Too bad, since it's better for children then a grape jolly rancher.

In my town, the Methodists had WAY better snacks than my home church, the Baptist. At Methodist VCS (Vacation Church School for you uninitiated), we had teacakes and homemade lemonade served from an enameled dishpan with a dipper. It was SO COLD you would have to go swing on the porch of the lady's house (one lady who lived next to the church was in charge of snacks) until you warmed up. THEN, you could get another dixie cup of that divine nectar. At our church, you got vanilla o's and five chips from the mean snack lady. She got "fired" from helping serveral years back. Thanks for letting me relive the bygone days.

I grew up in a fairly conservative church and for VBS, the older women often donated delicious homemade cookies (on top of the lovely "Vanilla-Os" you mentioned). Several years ago, I was asked to help with the craft tables. After the craft area was cleaned up one night, I decided to inspect the snack table for some left-overs. I selected a yummy-looking homemade chocolate chip cookie. The first bite was delightful. The second, not so much. It seems that the cookie baker lost one of her dress buttons while stirring up the batch. My mouthful of cookie also contained a pretty pink plastic button with a flower imprinted in the top. After inspecting the button and having a chuckle, I suddenly began to wonder what would have happened had a 3-year old gotten that particular cookie and swallowed their bite the wrong way...could have been disastrous. I am so glad that some places are still allowed to serve "homemade" goodies, but after the button incident, I'm not sure VBS should be one of those places. ;) I'm pretty positive that the kids enjoy those homemade cookies way more than the "Vanilla O's" though!

Our church had a contract or something with the makers of the Variety-Pak that had jelly dots, half chocolate/half vanilla cookies, all-chocolate drop cookies and I think a little chocolatey chip and a coconut-flavor cookie too. You'd take one, and hand the package to the next kid, all the while, if you were one of the last kids on the rotation, hoping that there'd be a jelly dot, chocolate blop or a half and half left and not one of the lesser-liked cookies. Dixie cups of colored, sweetened water poured from a green or gold aluminum pitcher accompanied the cookies. Fast forward decades and a client gives me a BIG ol' box of cookies. The Variety-Pak! Client is embarrassed at the lack of gourmetness in the cookies but I couldn't be more pleased to see these old cookie friends again. I put the twenty pounds or so of cookies on the counter where the shared office treats are kept. Despite being inundated with holiday goodies, the jelly dots just about vaporized, they were gone that quickly, and the half and half kind followed shortly thereafter. Full circle! Just now found this site and my poor husband is wondering what is causing the insane laughter emanating from the home office...

Come on! Am I too old? When I was young, VBS wasn't VBS without the Archer Farms Windmill cookie. You would sit and break off windmill pieces for HOURS! Every time I see them on the shelf in the grocery store I think of church...
