FYI, there’s basically 2 definitions for a “promise ring”: one is purity ring, the other if the “semi-engagement” ring described by another reader. Your use the the term “promise ring” clearly confused people, but I don’t think it’s non-standard english.

I know Stephen Colbert is a Christian, but that doesn't mean his writing style is overtly religious. Plus, I'm not referring to the show Colbert Report anyway, I'm talking about his book, which is similar to this blog in voice.

Stephen Colbert is a christian. Besides, SCL is way more Jon Stewart and Daily Show than Colbert Report.
