It was really hard for me to read this. I understand the connection between the two movies...but can you really say that Man on Fire represents God's love better than how He showed it Himself? I may be biased...The Passion is the single thing that brought me into my relationship with Jesus...which makes me disagree with the statement that Man on Fire showed Jesus' character while the Passion just told it. Growing up i had heard about Jesus and the cross....but until i was 'shown' His life...i didn't fully understand. It may have just been an 'ok' movie to you, already a Christian, but it was powerful, and seeing it proved to me that Jesus can move in and through anything He wants...whether its a movie, a song, or just one Bible verse. He speaks to everyone in different ways...and that's what makes Him AWESOME! :)

p.s. i liked Man on Fire a lot. great movie.

I realize this is a long time ago, but I have to comment anyways. I LOVE this movie (Man on Fire); The Passion was good, too, but nothing compared to Man on Fire. I like giving God the opportunity to go beyond the obvious. I had watched it once or twice and liked it, but the last time I watched, God sort of hit me in the face with the symbolism between myself and Pita, He and Creasy. I think I had taken the idea of Christ being a "ransom" for my life for granted, but when a character who I had fallen in love with in the movie becomes a ransom for a little girl...that's something I could understand. I agree with you; it is a beautiful representation of the desperation God has for each of us to be close with Him.

I agree with very word. I showed Man on Fire at church several months ago. On a Saturday night, men only (no kids). We discussed it afterward. Greatness. Hard to see how people don't see God in that story.

Ohhh, I agree! Such a beautiful, compelling movie. I had the good fortune to go into the movie completely blind (I didn't even know it was in Spanish) and was able to be totally swept away in the story. Georgous film!

Your post reminds me of a thought that occurred during a study of Revelations. That thought being is there anything as truly frightening as an army of angels charged with one task...the utter destruction of all that is not Love.

When that image hit, all I could see was the tear-stained cheeks of angels as they purged the Earth of evil we have allowed to fester.

I actually refuse to watch Passion.

For a while, the college I attended had banned watching any rated-R movie -but- Passion. I thought this was hypocritical, and not reason enough for me to watch it.

Nothing about it ever seemed edifying to me at all. I don't mind violence in my movies, as I count Gladiator, Man on Fire, and The Last Samurai among my favorites. But the violence in all those movies had purpose, it was conflict. Two (or more) capable people who knew what they were getting into, doing what they had to do, whatever their reasons were.

Passion of the Christ struck me, on the surface, as a gore-fest. I know, historically and medically, how Christ died. It was gruesome. But I don't see that Passion really adds anything to the story (and I don't think it should.) It's like this; I know what happened. I don't think I need to watch one man's vision of how it happened. Especially when (by all reports) his vision is one of the most unashamedly brutal depictions of the crucifixion in cinematic history.

It's not violence I dislike. It's torture. And crucifixion is death by torture. And Mel Gibson made a feature-length film out of a single act of crucifixion.

That's what disturbs me, and gives me reason to never watch it.

I loved Passion of the Christ but it made me cry so I only watched it the one time. Man on Fire, love that movie, but until now I had not seen the hidden Christ narrative. Now I do. Thank you for showing that to me. I will remember. Powerful stuff, my friend.
