For us, it was always Stephen King-esque places (one of the downsides of living in New England).

I know this is a very late comment on this post, but I think it is worth commenting. My family went to missionary training a few years back in Indiana. When we arrived to the campus we were surprised that only one little part of the building looked ready for guests. Later in the evening as we were eating dinner we found out that the campus was actually an old insane asylum! With that knowledge my dad, brothers and I had a lot of fun scouting what looked like the most epic horror film location ever! padded rooms and all.

Brad mentioned one of my favorite places: Fort Caswell right in between Wilmington, NC and Myrtle Beach, SC. But the scariest place in on the other side of the state: In The Oaks in Black Mountain, NC (Near Ridgecrest).
In The Oaks is a mansion built in the 1920's buy a GE executive. It was his family's retreat and was used for entertaining and as a summer residence. The guy (I can't remember his name) died in the house.
But that's not the freakiest thing about this place. The great room in the house has a vaulted ceiling with a balcony. On the ceiling, roughly 25 feet above the floor, is a bright red spot. The legend is that the executive's oldest daughter had a massive crush on the butler. He did not return her affection, and in fact fell in love with another woman. She was maddened with jealousy. So much so, in fact, that she plotted to kill him. So, when he was tending to the fire one day, she stood on the balcony with a knife. When his back was turned, she threw the knife and nailed him right between the shoulder blades. His blood pressure was so high that his blood squirted 25 feet to the ceiling. He died on the floor. Every attempt to paint over the blood stain was foiled, as the stain bled through (no pun intended).

Ahhh, Fort Caswell. I got lost in the fort one time. I also found the quicksand near the entrance.
But I loooooove the beach!

One year for summer camp we stayed at a big campground. Totally not creepy; actually quite scenic. We were laughing and having fun in our tent when a youth leader came by, "Ummmm, there's a creepy guy on a bicycle riding around saying he wants to hold a bible study for young girls, sooo...we're telling all the girls not to leave the tents tonight." Well, that put a damper on the mood.

We have had someone think they are demon possessed/seen a demon at every single camp we have been to. One time a girl claimed she saw a demon. When the youth leader when to check it out, it was just a tree stump. 5 years later, we still call 'the demon stump'

On my first mission trip, we stayed in a haunted old school building. We heard a scream when we were there alone.
