128. Throwing stuff away out of guilt. Buying it again later.

I have owned three different copies of the movie “Fight Club.” The reason I have owned this movie multiple times is that sometimes I feel convicted about it and become convinced that God does not want me to own it. It’s got some nudity, is ultra violent and has a pretty dark message. So after a particularly convicting retreat I usually throw it away. About a month later though, I remember how much I like it. It’s got a great message about how consumer focused our culture has become. It’s got some good quotes:

“Only after disaster can we be resurrected. It’s only after we’ve lost everything that we’re free to do anything.”
“The things you own end up owning you.”
But it is by no means a spiritually uplifting movie. When Paul talks about focusing your eyes on things that are true, Fight Club is probably not what he had in mind. So after I’ve bought it again, I throw it away again. Some people do this with music. Some do it with friends. Why do we do it?
Because, it’s easier to deal with the symptoms of a problem than it is the cause of a problem. Throwing away music and movies and other stuff is simple. Going inside to understand why I am drawn to these things or what need I feel they will meet is complicated. So I buy Fight Club. I throw away Fight Club. I buy Fight Club. I throw away Fight Club.
It’s a problem.

Seriously? An Orc? This is the wrong story for you my friend. You’re going to hate this one because I promise, there are zero Orcs and no one has a sword. Well, one of the bad guys has a really long knife but it certainly hasn’t be made by Elfin Lords in days of yore.
