I'm a voice student and when I was in high school my dream was to be the next Sarah Brightman and star in the next Phantom of the Opera musical hit. My voice teacher told me right before I moved on to studying voice in college, "You'll never be the next Sarah Brightman. You will be the next You. You will be the only You." And the same goes for Donald Miller. There is only ONE Donald Miller, just like there is only ONE C.S. Lewis (the writer I most try to emulate) and there is only one Jon Acuff. So Donald Miller is the next Donald Miller and you are the next Jon Acuff. It doesn't make you better or worse than Donald Miller. It makes you exactly who you are, and that is a very freeing realization. God isn't looking for another Donald Miller, He's got one, and that's enough. And He's just crazy about Jon Acuff. (So am I and my friends and family; we actually like you as much as Donald Miller).

I just read one of his books! - a million miles in a thousand years-
it was actually really good.
i was afraid it'd be too 'teary' and try to change my life in ways fiction shouldn't. (one of my biggest pet peeves. "____ changed my life." i don't think so. I think Donald Miller's book can lead you to think, and thinking might lead you to God who in fact is a big fan of life-changing, but until then, Donald Miller is simply a surprisingly engaging author.)

Donald Miller may be honest, but he knows nothing about jazz. He says jazz doesn't resolve, and he hated it until he saw someone play it with passion. Most jazz DOES resolve. And I can play the worst music in the world with passion and mean it, but it's still bad music. I don't know much about jazz but I know way more than he does. And he called the book "Blue Like Jazz"?

I read the book once and hated it. Maybe I'll try it again someday, but I'm sure I'll hate it more.

I don't know that he is the NEXT Donald Miller (pretty sure he had books out before Miller published BLJ), but I find a lot of similarities between him and Mark Driscoll. Driscoll is also funny, witty, and brutally honest about his shortcomings and the shortcomings of his church, both in print and in his spoken word. If you are looking for the next author who will blow your mind, Driscoll is it. Definitely NOT Rob Bell!

Donald Miller's gonna write the prefaces for my first two books and then go into retirement because he can't top them. Really. Just watch.

My first book will be on the dangers of pride.

The second one will be on unexposed hypocrisy.

so a few years ago, i was working on a writing project on which DM was also contributing. ( i was a lowly assistant, not an author.) inevitably, every communication i had with him turned into one of the most random and/or embarrassing events of my 20's. however ridiculous i was, he always responded with kindness, warmth, and a hint of sarcasm. he's not perfect. but that's what we love about him.
