Last year our youth group was on the way to SIx Flags after camp and I was on the cool van. We saw a woman driving a car with 4 young children and she was texting while going down the freeway. I suggested that we make a sign to get her attention. The girl sitting by me pulled out a piece of paper and a marker and we wrote GET OFF THE PHONE. The woman saw it and put away her phone. We got 6 other people to get off their phones that day. Now the cool van is referred to as "The Lifesaver Van" since we always make a GET OFF THE PHONE sign. We leave for camp on Sunday, but this year we are taking a charter bus. The reason for that is that last year after SIx Flags, we stayed the night at a Days Inn in the bad part of town. Nothing good happened at that motel. The "entertainment" in the lobby was a transgender stripper. Two people from our group managed to sneak out and go to the Indian store down the street. Our church now has a total boycott against Days Inn.

Oh man, the junker van was the cool van in our youth group. It was a busted up Red Van with the right headlight popping out, no A/C and we called it the Deathmobile. Mostly because we played Christian Hardcore and Pop Punk on the way to the Beach Trips and Retreats. So this in effect was the cool van, inversely because we were cool enough to handle it. And the youth leader who always drove it played the best music out of everyone. Although it wasn't so awesome when driving up the mountain and watching the windshield wipers fail us on slippery iced roads...how we never breached our insurance policy I will never know. But I now have a great foundation of MxPx and Maylene and the Sons of Disaster in result of it.

I admit, we do acquire a good many of them, but they always provide a good laugh when you remember them later and a way to bond with people you hadn't really talked to before =D

I always was the cool kid who rode with a whole posse of kids, listened to cool music, and had good snacks. We had a bus though, so we just sat in the back. Sorry!!

Luckily for me, We only had one van at the churches I went to as an adolescent... and now that I'm almost out of the youth group age, I get to ride in separate vehicles with the other older kids. (SCORE!)
My youth group now has two vans and most of the time it's girls and boys... so it takes out the cool vs. dorky equation. I can certainly relate to this though, I've seen it happen to many another and am thankful God spared me of it. =D

This may be covered later on in the blog, but remember the "Hand Check" or "Rapture Check" while riding on the church bus/van (usually done while riding during the night)? The lights inside the bus would come on, the youth pastor (usually the driver) would yell "Hand Check" and the youth would have to hold up their hands to prove they weren't holding hands with the opposite sex... Ahhh those were the days... :-)

This is so true. Cliques are a reality in youth groups, just like everywhere else. The inside jokes were the worst. Fortunately, I managed to be on the inside of most of them, but I know it sucked for those on the out.
