Wow this is actually really relevant! I just attended a youth group beach bbq the other day and sported one of these. Actually, I had no clue it was called a tankini, it's just my swimsuit. Most of the girls there were wearing teeny little bikinis, which i don't really have a problem with, but it did seem a little awkward.

tbh have a bikini top that goes with my swimsuit bottoms as well, but I usually wear the longer top, not for modesty, but because IMO its a lot cuter and classy looking than my teeny-weeny little top, and I get self conscious about my belly.

as you probably already know, boys are way more visual than we are and they tend to have a harder time controlling lustful desires than we women do. i am a believer in christ and i talked to a guy friend (who is also a believer) about what it is like and he said it is extremely hard and it is kind of an insult to him when girls don't dress modestly. i totally understand where you are coming from - you have a point. but at the same time wearing a one-piece, which is a trivial hassle in the scheme of life, is just a way to help our brothers in christ.

Me too. I think if you're swimming everyone else is in similar attire so it's not like you're the sole point of focus versus if you flounced around the grocery store in a bikini. Geez, personal preference, people.

I've always tried to take the view that personal responsibility applies to both sides. Paul taught us not to put a stumbling block in front of others. I think that includes modest attire. But I also think that "so as not to cause men to sin" needs to be changed to "not to tempt men to sin." "Causing men to sin" does indeed ring as an attempt to absolve the man of responsibility, as if he had no choice but to sin because it was presented to him (which it absolutely is in Islam). God doesn't view it that way. The man still has full choice of his actions. A woman can put temptation in the way of a man by dressing immodestly, and I think God does hold the woman responsible for that stumbling block. But God also holds the man responsible not to give in to the temptation.

As for rape, there are women who put themselves at greater risk by choice of attire and location, but there is absolutely no justification for rape ever. No one ever "deserves it."

Seriously. Imposing a one-piece or the freaking awkward tankini is really encouraging boys to avoid all responsibility for their thought life and putting the burden on girls. The female body is not something to be ashamed of. To the rest of the world, Christian youth groups continue to look socially awkward, prudish, and oppressive to females. Congrats to the overbearing and legalistic adults who linger around youth groups and have no concept of the bigger picture. They create a massive disconnect from the real world, with little no effectiveness in reaching the lost.

In our church's youth group, whenever we go swimming (which is pretty rare), we have to wear big T-shirts over our tankinis and one-pieces.
