My dad, who actually is a professional mechanic, was our youth group’s favorite chaperone for that very reason. There wasn’t much he could do, however, when his boat blew up on a youth group trip to Lake Shasta. I’m told the incident left about 7 or 8 people stranded; treading water and watching as the entire interior of the boat ignited. See? It’s not just cars, vans and buses!

Just started reading your blog! I came across this post and had to leave a comment b/c I completely related to it. The last 2-3 years I was in my church’s youth group, our church van broke down/had a flat tire on every long-distance trip we went on (I promise I’m not exaggerating). When our group gets together now that we’re “all grown up”, those are the stories that come up every time!

Our church minibus blew a tire in the middle of the Holland Tunnel in NYC. Of course, it had to be the inner tire on a dually axle.

I read the title as “Youth groups that break down, blow up and in general suck”. And I thought of my husband’s old youth group that basically blew up when the youth minister’s wife divorced him (the rumor was that he cheated, but who really knows).

Oh, that is so true. I remember my childhood pastor telling the congregation that the church had been broken into and the thieves had stolen some sound equipment, “and they took the church van! Praise God!” We were so glad to never see that thing again.

Some kind soul lent our youth group a bus to drive from Atlanta to Miami without telling anyone that the air conditioning didn't work!

Ahh, nothing like the smell of a bus load of teenagers (and their parents who refused to miss out on a fun trip to southern Cal) broken down on the side of the road between Las Vegas and LA . . . all night, because the bus was a POS. And hurrying into the LA basin in the rain to "do a service" for another youth group without benefit of showers and/or toiletry items. As the youth pastor's wife, we were responsible, even tho the senior pastor was also on the trip (see above mentioned fun trip to southern Cal). As they say, "good times."

We borrowed a van to take a bunch of students to a fundraiser. It broke on a major large highway. I'm not sure why to this day, but I felt it would be better for the everyone to get out of the van and wait out side, on the side of the highway in the cold. Within minutes the van was a huge ball of fire. We caused a miles-long traffic jam – a fact we're very proud of. The coolest part was when the gas tank blew up. I called the guy who owned the van to let him know his car was in flames. I woke him up, informed him… and he laughed. We then laughed together, as his car burned.
