He already talked about it above, but if your unfamiliar with these posts, that last been about pioneering pastors was classic Jon Acuff sarcasm. So you were totally responding to his with your own.

I want to mention that if christians have worked hard for their money there is absolutely no reason they cant have that expensive tv/sound system or whatever its called. Or there is no reason why a lady cant buy designer clothing and shoes. Its their money

I once heard a close friend of Frank Sinatra's speak. He said that one day they were getting into a car in the rain when a woman ran up to Frank and asked him for an autograph. While he was signing it, she commented that his cufflinks were nice, asking where he bought them because she would like to get a pair for her husband. Immediately, Frank took off the cufflinks and gave them to the woman for her husband. His friend, the speaker, was shocked. He said, "Frank, why did you give those to her? You don't even know her! Those were expensive cufflinks!" Frank replied, "If you have, in your possession, something that you can't give away, then you don't own it. It owns you." I've always thought of it that way.

To build on the comment above, Jesus' response to the rich young ruler was specific to him: what was more important to him; his riches or Jesus? In the end, he chose his riches because he placed more value in them. Money is not the root of all evil, rather it is the love of money.

I've thought about this topic quite a bit after reading The Irresistable Revolution by Shane Claiborne. It's a good book, check it out. But what my faith has come down to is this: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind and all your strength. If you are truly doing this, then you're love for the children in the sweatshops that make those nice things, those stereotyped starving African children, will overcome your desire for something that makes you look good. I fail at this more often then I care to admit, but God has laid it on my heart that I try my best to give everything up to him and LOVE other people with all I have, money included. God doesn't love me any less if I look terrible and never purchase another thing. Plus by reducing, reusing and recycling everything possible it's a good way to protect creation.

"Why spend your money on what is not bread and your labor on what does not satisfy?"
