Every dream has a community.
Sometimes, it’s easy to think that nobody would care about your particular dream. You’ve got an idea that matters a lot to you, but you can’t imagine it would be something you could build a tribe or a movement or a community around. It’s too weird or too niche or too something. But recently while I was walking in the parking lot of the mall, a bumper sticker reminded me that’s not true.
The reality is that every dream has a community.
Here’s the sticker in question:
My first thought upon seeing the question “Got Pole Vault?,” was “No, no I don’t have a pole vault. Who on the planet is driving down the road and answering that question with ‘yes, actually I do got pole vault. It’s strapped to the roof of my Kia. Thanks for asking.”
I’ve seen some obscure “Got _____” stickers, but that one felt like the most specific one I’ve ever seen. But the truth is, there’s a pole vault community. Someone printed that sticker, someone bought that sticker, someone stuck that sticker on their car because there’s a community of pole vaulters out there. Do they have an after work league? Is there an indoor version you can get for your house like owning a treadmill when you want to run? Do they have nicknames for each other like Greg “the Vault Eagle” Richards?
I don’t know, but I do know they have a community, they have a tribe, they have a movement.
So the question isn’t, “Are there people that will care about your dream?” because there are. They’re already talking and sharing and making stickers about the thing you’re really passionate about. The real question is, “Will you find them?” They’re out there.
Question: What’s one way you’ve looked for a community of people who care about what you care about most?
